The Nenana Messsenger News was one of the best home businesses around for me. I loved it, did all the work at home, had it printed out, then delivered it myself. What fun it was!

At that time, being a daytime bartender helped keep the money coming in, and drew me out of some of my shyness.

Now, about that young man.

With that little encouragement and one evening, Dave produced a video that was viewed by a crowd of about a hundred volunteers at a regional conference. That video was the best presentation of a volunteer project during the entire conference.

Now back to the minivan.

Petite seven year old Melody, when getting into the family minivan would take her seat and watch as her two sisters fastened their seatbelts. When they were all fastened in, they would start in on Melody.

So, Melody would then reluctantly fasten her seat belt, usually procrastinating enough to get help from one of her sisters. She wasn’t the youngest, either, so it wasn’t a matter of being to young to accomplish the task.

Once the girls grandmother saw this little development, she knew what to do.

The next time they got ready to go somewhere, Grandma and Melody were the first to load into the minivan.

Grandma turned around and told Melody how smart and quick she was in everything else, and that Grandma knew that Melody could be the first one to click her seatbelt any day.

The other girls jumped in about then, got all buckled in, and then looked at Melody, and I swear, their little chins almost dropped. They said not a word though. Grandma and Mom both told Melody that they were impressed and appreciated her being the first one in and ready to travel.

The rest of Grandma’s visit, every time they loaded into the minivan, Melody was always the first one buckled in, and next year, same story, and again the year after. And Grandma now had to tell Melody thank you for being so quick, but the other sisters as well. And they all lived happily ever after.

Much of the world’s population does not remember in the early 1960’s when the world came to it’s close encounter with another world war.

In a minute, two world leaders with the power to destroy each others governments and millions of innocent civilians face off and save face.

All of the internet is awash with “social” marketing. The best home businesses are still using making money ideas like free classified advertisements.

While you may not think this is the most elite marketing idea, a classified advertisement of mine that was placed nearly six months ago showed up in one of my online searches for business information.

The classified ad was placed before “keyword” was in my vocabulary. Don’t you know that more classifieds of mine will start showing up sooner, now that they will be written with my “keywords” in them.

You may have read about the 1962 Cuban missile crisis in your studies about history.

For those of us who remember the early sixties, it wasn’t all about rock and roll.

It was a frightening time filled with neighbors who secretly built bomb shelters, and, in addition to fire drills at all schools and public buildings, there were bomb drills.

I remember, being in a daylight basement level classroom, the protocol. We went to the side of the classroom where the building foundation was, and crouched there with our arms protecting our heads.

Whispers of “you know, nothing would save us if it happens” were scary, because we knew that it was probably true.

President John F. Kennedy, during a short period of time, negotiated with the Soviet Union’s Nikita Khrushchev over the Soviet’s installing long range nuclear missiles in Cuba.

They figured out how to save personal, national and international face, and avoided a dreaded world nuclear holocaust.

Russian missiles were removed from Cuba, U.S. missiles were removed from Turkey, and the U.S. (Kennedy) assured Krushchev that the U.S. would not invade Cuba, which was why Cuba’s Castro had elicited help from the Soviets for in the first place.*

In this case, saving face also meant saving lives.

It is the best example of “saving face” on both sides that I’ve ever known.
