The Nenana Messsenger News was one of the best home businesses around for me. I loved it, did all the work at home, had it printed out, then delivered it myself. What fun it was!

Back in the 1990’s, my computer skills were nil, preventing me from moving up to more elite marketing niches. Until then, the newspaper originals were laid out using, literally, cut & paste with a craft blade and a glue-stick. Cut & Paste was not very professional looking.

The basic college course was no help, the instructor was never around. Everyone else in the class was way younger than me and being so embarrassed about being ignorant about computers kept me from asking for help. Admitting defeat was hard.

At that time, being a daytime bartender helped keep the money coming in, and drew me out of some of my shyness.

A young customer learned about my fears and told me how easy is was to use a computer. He offered to help. He visited my home each night for a solid week while I struggled with learning to quell the fear of that little boxy computer. He made himself at home and watched movies until I panicked again.

Every time I got stuck, usually when I’d hit some key by mistake, my friend would pause his movie and explain to me what I did and how to fix it.

What a great friend he was to me. By the end of the week, I was over my fears and jumping into the new age of computers.
